The evening session was the Mr and Miss Pride pageant, that was well attended as hundreds came out to see the community crown a new king and queen. The transgender women looked magnificent in their heels, well done hair and polished nails. The contestants were excited as each had high hopes of taking the crown home and the community was there to cheer them on.

On this very date (2nd August) last year, Pride Uganda kicked off the one-week festival with an opening gala at one of Kampala’s upscale hotels. The gala was attended by several community members, organisation heads, delegates from various foreign missions as well as representatives of different partners.

The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Intersex youth in Uganda continue to defy the notion that the community is characterized by lazy, self-pitying individuals. To curb the issue of unemployment, a group of youth have come together and formed an alliance named Rainbow Mirrors.
Of Nelson Mandela’s many wise sayings, one of my favorite is the old maxim: “Where you stand depends on where you sit.” Since we are also talking about sexuality, I would add that where you stand also depends on where (and how) you sleep. Hence the title of my presentation today: Standing, Sitting and Sleeping.
