spaces by breaking the barriers of heteronormativity and redefining the narratives.
We have been pivotal in many social justice movements. We can still reclaim our
voice and grounding by ensuring our voices are heard and our presence felt.
We urge the sex work movement, partners and allies to show their support to tackle sexual gender based violence by attending this event slated on Friday 8th March 2019 at Mulago Play Ground, 12pm-6pm.
Fallen Ugandan LGBTQ activist David Kato was on 31st January 2019, given the first ever Paul Cottingham Trust Award for his work and effort towards bettering the lives of LGBTQ Ugandans. The award which was received by Sexual Minorities Uganda’s Executive Director Dr. Frank Mugisha was handed over by Micheal Cashman at the Kaleidoscope Trust dinner.
The project was birthed after the realization that the existing interventions and research data exclude and deliberately sideline LBQT persons due to already existing societal homophobia and fear. The findings also revealed that people only understand Intimate Partner Violence(IPV) in the heteronormative context thus leaving a gap within the gender and sexual minorities and the misconception that IPV doesn’t occur in same sex relationships/ partnerships especially within LBQ/ WSW women is undeniable.
The continued criminalization of same-sex relations, sex work among others is contradictory with the attempts to end sexual violence in Uganda. The law needs to take into the account of the reality of all Ugandans. Basing a new law on old draconian laws is both exclusionary and goes against progressive human rights trends that focus on consent and agency in regards to sexuality.
Discriminatory laws like the HIV law should be repealed to enable the general population understand that HIV is no longer a death sentence and there is no shame in being HIV+.
