Statement on World AIDS Day from Women of Faith in Action (WOFA)

Today, on World AIDS Day, Women of Faith in Action stands united with the global community to reflect, recommit, and act under this year’s theme: *Take the Rights Path: My Health, My Right!*

At the heart of this day is a call to recognize health as a fundamental human right—a right that transcends gender, race, sexual orientation and socioeconomic status. Yet, for many women in Uganda, especially those marginalized by their sexuality, identity, or status, this right remains out of reach due to stigma, discrimination, and lack of access to essential services.

HIV remains a challenge within our communities, exacerbated by silence and misconceptions perpetuated even in places of worship. Religious leaders wield immense influence, often serving as pillars of their communities. They have the power to break chains of stigma, ignite compassionate conversations, and create safe spaces for vulnerable populations to seek help without fear of judgment. Yet, this power has not been realized. Too often, pulpits remain silent on matters that touch on HIV and the rights of marginalized individuals, leaving communities unprepared and unempowered to address these critical issues.

Women of Faith in Action calls upon all spiritual leaders to rise to this challenge. We implore you to use your platforms to speak boldly about the realities of HIV, to dismantle harmful stereotypes, and to educate your congregations about prevention, testing, and treatment. Let your sermons embrace compassion, inspire acceptance, and promote equity. Shying away from these topics will only perpetuate the cycles of ignorance and prejudice that fuel the spread of the virus.

Faith must be a bridge, not a barrier. By embracing inclusive and affirming practices, faith communities can be sanctuaries of hope and healing for those living with or affected by HIV. Together, we can challenge patriarchal norms that have sidelined women—including queer women—from leadership roles in spiritual settings and from access to lifesaving healthcare.

As Women of Faith in Action, we commit to continuing our work to restore faith and confidence among marginalized women. Through advocacy, mentorship, and connection, we will champion their right to health, dignity, and leadership in every sphere of life. We believe that every woman has a higher purpose to bring revival and transformation to her community. Let us walk this path together, ensuring no one is left behind in our collective fight against HIV.

On this World AIDS Day, let us take the rights path—where health is a right, dignity is a given, and every life is valued.
