17th May, 2023 is commemorated across the world as the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, and Transphobia (IDAHOBIT), we are joining in solidarity with the Ugandan LGBTQ+ community to speak out against the draconian Anti-Homosexuality Bill, 2023. The Bill was passed by Uganda’s Parliament and awaits action from President Museveni. If signed into law, it would sentence LGBTQ+ people to life in prison—or even death—for being who they are.
Businesses operating in Uganda have been almost completely silent about this Bill, despite the fact that companies’ employees and contractors will be harmed by the Bill; promoting inclusive workplaces will become a criminal act; and that many companies claim to support our human rights—but have done nothing to defeat this deadly Bill. Their complicity must be challenged.
Today, we are demanding that corporations with a massive presence in Uganda speak out against this Bill if they truly support the human rights of their LGBTQ+ employees and customers. Two priority corporate targets are TotalEnergies and CitiGroup.
