Akina Mama Wa Africa have called upon well-wishers to join them in signing a petition that will urge the East Africa Legislative Assembly (EALA) Parliament to pass the proposed EAC SRHR BIll 2021. The Legislative House, in June 2021, introduced the EAC SRHR Bill that protects East African women and girls’ sexual and reproductive health throughout their entire life course. If enacted, the Bill will be anchored as part of the universal health coverage frameworks in Kenya, Tanzania, Burundi, Uganda, South Sudan, and Rwanda.
According to the organization, currently, 19 million women in East Africa cannot access modern contraception. A further 2.5 million are at risk of death due to complications from unsafe abortions.
The pointless tragedies and grief can be avoided if we have a regional law that advances access to accurate information and quality services and provides protection of the sexual and reproductive health of East African women and girls in all their diversities.
Please sign the petition here.
