Hollywood star Jussie Smollet is set to appeal a court ruling that saw him convicted of filing a false police report.
According to one of his lawyers Nenye Uche, they are confident that Jussie Smollet will be acquitted.
Trouble for the actor started back in 2019 when he told police that he had been a victim of a hate crime near his home when two attackers jumped him.
Prosecutors argued in court that Jussie Smollett instructed two brothers, Abimbola Osundairo and Olabinjo Osundairo on all of the details of the attack. He specifically instructed them to punch him only hard enough to create a bruise, pour bleach on his clothing and place a rope around his neck like a noose. The prosecutors also faulted Jussie Smollett for not cooperating adequately with the investigation by hesitating when it came to turning over evidence especially his mobile phone.
The openly gay actor is famously known for his role as Jamal Lyon from the Fox series Empire and should court stand its ground on the conviction, he could face up to three years in prison.
Luckily for him the judge did not set a sentencing date at Thursday’s hearing and released him on bond so he could be spending the upcoming holidays with family and friends.
