In celebration of the upcoming International Women’s Day, Golden Centre for Women’s Rights (GCWR) Uganda on Tuesday 26th 2019 launched the Women sex work Inter-organization soccer Tournament that is to be held on Friday 8th March 2019 with a view to educate the community on issues of sexual Gender Based Violence under the theme Balance for Better. #KickforEquality
Women sex work groups from Mukono, Wakiso and Kampala will form teams and are to compete representing different diversities of women including refugee sex workers.
The main objective of this event is:
- To create awareness and sensitize the community about sexual gender based violence
- To promote Sustainable Development Goal (SDG5) gender equality.
The event also aims to promote unity and diversity amongst women sex workers from rural and urban areas in Uganda through innovation in sports.
We believe using sports is an area in which we can leverage our partnerships and engagement with different audiences to promote gender equality, women empowerment, solidarity and social inclusion. We are looking at ending client perpetrated Sexual Gender Based Violence (SGBV) among women sex workers which involves engaging men and duty bearers on how they can influence social change towards ending Sexual Gender Based Violence. This is a space where women sex workers are going to demand for their rights and call for action for others to accelerate gender balance.
SGBV is the most socially tolerated human rights violation of all time, deeply rooted in traditional inequity and ignorance that impede the achievement of sustainable goal 5.
“We are playing against Sexual Gender Based violence inflicted on us as sex workers, refugee sex workers and trans women sex workers. We are playing to celebrate the lives of the sisters we lost in the same manner, we are playing for Justice, Emancipation and Empowerment. Sex workers should have the same basic human and labor rights as other working people. We want to break the stereotype that women can’t play football” said Shira Natenda, Executive director, GCWR-Uganda.
We urge the sex work movement, partners and allies to show their support to tackle sexual gender based violence by attending this event slated on Friday 8th March 2019 at Mulago Play Ground, 12pm-6pm.
Come learn and be inspired as you have fun- Entrance is free.
