John Abdallah Wambere aka Long Jones was born this day.He is an out advocate for the rights of Lesbian,Gay,Bisexual,Transgender and Intersex (LGBTI) people.Jones a teacher by profession did alot of commendable work with Spectrum Uganda Initiatives an organization that advocates for health andh human rights of men who have sex with men(MSM) advocating for equality in health service provision at a time when many LGBTI people were facing hostile situation with rigid government policies.
Jones engaged many partners from the ministry of health and other health service providers to provide a platform for gay men and all LBTI people to access health services without any exclusion on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity.
He later relocated to the US for safety reasons on the basis of his work for sexual minorities in Uganda due to rampant media outings and witchunt from those opposed to his kind of work.He also featured in the documentary “Call Me Kuchu” portrying the daily lives of LGBTI Ugandans who were determined to fight for their rights irrespective of a hostile environment.
Long Jones is still a part of the struggle for equality in his home country Uganda and masterminded a fundraiser this year to help save LGBTI ugandan refugees in Kenya.
